Denatured alcohol does two jobs in a conventional fragrance. It dissolves the aromatics, and it evaporates fast enough at skin temperature to throw them off you and into the room. The second job is the one you notice: the blast at close range, the headache by hour two, the chemical note underneath by hour three.
Take the alcohol out and you need another way to hold the scent. We use six cold-pressed carrier oils. They stay where you put them, warm as you do, and release over four to six hours at roughly an arm’s length.
Cold juniper and cracked pepper, then something dry and green underneath. Reads as clean until the cumin turns up, and then it stops being anyone else’s fresh scent.
